Why you should learn to dance in a Dance Class.

The least you should know in order to enjoy going out dancing:

Swing, Waltz, Foxtrot and Cha Cha.

Then you can spin the night away looking fantastic at social events and weddings including your own.

Dancing is beautiful and enjoyable and is both an art and a sport that requires proper instruction. You do not have to become a professional dancer or a competitor just because you take classes. You take classes to learn to dance correctly.

Classes are enjoyable themselves and are great opportunity to learn to dance, meet new friends, increase you social exposure, and get some exercise. See benefits of dance.

If you want to dance well you need classes. You will be surprised how popular you will become if you can dance well. People will be looking forward to you showing up on the dance floor. No matter your age or financial status.

Attempting to learn to dance without instruction is like watching a golfer and expecting to be a good golfer. You just get some balls and clubs and whack them around; that's all that there is to it right? Same with dancing it is more involved than what you observe.

Would you expect to watch Tiger Woods or Sarah Hughes play golf and then go out and play as well as them? Perhaps bring home a Gold Medal, just by observing them play a game? No! Neither can you watch Great Dancers or poor dancers dance in public, on video or TV and expect to go out and do it correctly.

If anything this watch-others-method will be detrimental to learning properly. You will likely learn many bad habits. These bad habits will cost you three times the time, effort and expense you tried to save by using this poor method of learning to dance in the first place. Which is a great expense in correcting those bad habits.

EXAMPLE: In West Coast Swing once a student learns to do a "Coaster" on the end instead of an "Anchor" it is almost impossible to keep them from falling back into the Coaster when they are socially dancing. A Coaster is an example of something you don't even know you should avoid. They did not know, they learned it well, really well, WRONG! And there are many things you can learn really well WRONG, without an instructor to assist and guide you.

Most wannabe dancers don't even know whether the couple they are watching are good or poor dancers; and then they try to emulate them. This can lead to Great Misadventure.

There is an enormous tendency when observing others to over exaggerate their movements. And if the couple you are observing are dancing badly then you are really in a predicament whenyou attempt to copy them.

Learning by observation will more likely cause you to become a herky-jerky dancer instead of a smooth and graceful one. Even the swing dance should not be performed in a jerky manner.

Leaders need to learn the correct frame and lead, too little and the lady has no clue what you want of her, too much and she feels assaulted. If you crank her around she will be cranky, and likely injured. Just learning footwork is never enough.

Followers need to learn the correct frame and tone so that they are able to read the leader's lead. Ladies need to have knowledge of the rhythm and the figures of the dance. This way you are prepared to follow his lead.

It is preferable to become a competent dancer that others enjoy dancing with than having them come up with polite excuses to avoid dancing with you.

If you dance incorrectly you can cause injury to your partner. You may cause them pain and discomfort. So when they refuse to dance with you it is not just out of pride; it is out of self-protection.

If you are a good follow or lead, others will be titillated to dance with you. It will not matter your age or physical appearance (as long as you are clean smelling and neat), they will enjoy dancing with you.

During Dance Classes you will learn many skills that you cannot pick up simply by watching others dance.

Instructors teach you techniques:

Rhythm

Balance

Poise/Posture

Frame

Lead and Follow

Turn Techniques

Figures (steps) for the dance you are learning

They can be a referee between you and your partner when there is a dispute

Floor craft

They correct you as needed; this is not something you can do for yourself

And much more.

The instructor is there to guide you and help you correct issues you may not even know you have. You most likely don't know you have. Many do not realize that they are doing something incorrectly, and get very good at doing it wrong until they have intervention, in the form of an instructor.

Even if you just "Dance for fun" or are a "Social Dancer" that is not an excuse for allowing yourself to be an inferior dancer. It is not just professional dance competitors need lessons or coaches. Also maybe your little routine is getting old and tired and you need to learn some new material. Add a little spice to your life.

Nor is it just professional golfers that compete that need to learn how to golf and learn the etiquettes of golf. Even the social golfer needs to know their way around the golf course.

Dancers need to know how to hold their partner properly just like golfers need to know how to hold their club properly. And in many ways dancing is more complex because you are holding another person at the same time you are attempting certain moves and turns.
